I just recently watched the movie The Craigslist Killer. The movie is about a medical student who studied at Boston University and turns out to be a killer. After doing some careful research I discovered that more than a majority of the things in the movie were factual. The student had everything. He had a beautiful wife, a bright career ahead of him but he threw it all away. His story baffled Boston PD, his wife, friends, professors and certainly me. I came upon this article today in Scientific American. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=anger-management-self-control . This article relates to the killings of the six people and assassination attempt on Rep Gabrielle Giffords. Violence constitutes a balance of power and control. These two elements are epistatic but another factor, so called mirror neurons also seem to play in what makes an individual to just go bezerk. For example, the act of imitation such as in movies, television or real life events can establish violence. Yes, there have been studies to back this claim but this simple concept of mirror neurons is much more complex. Our brain is an intricate system of interwoven circuits, impulses etc. and a minor change in the activity of mirror neurons can be “dampened” and thus cause much more damage than is really considered. Whatever the theory it may be I just hope that maybe we can find a more “exact” source for violence. Most likely the search will be in genes but that is for another post..
